18th-century Chantilly – Rare Covered Sugar Bowl In Soft Porcelain, Kakiemon Design

Artist: Manufacture De Chantilly

A rare lidded sugar bowl made of Chantilly soft porcelain, oval in shape, resting on a small foot and featuring two openwork, upturned side handles.

The lid, slightly domed and scalloped, is topped by an elegant handle shaped like a leafy branch, accented with turquoise and manganese.

A very beautiful Japanese-inspired Kakiemon polychrome decoration, characteristic of the early productions of the Chantilly manufactory: flowering branches, Indian flowers, birds, insects, and a flowering hedge motif, rendered in a delicate palette of water green, blue, yellow, orange-red, and manganese on a white background.

The rim of the lid and the handles are accented with a manganese border.

The reverse side bears the hunting horn mark painted in iron red, the iconic mark of the Chantilly manufactory.

This piece dates from the manufactory’s early production period, when it was under the patronage of the Prince of Condé and strongly influenced by Japanese porcelain imported into Europe in the early 18th century.

Chantilly, circa 1735–1745.
Soft porcelain with tin-glaze.

In generally good condition considering its age, with minor firing irregularities and signs of normal wear typical of this type of antique porcelain.
