From the studio collection of Henri Laffite in Condom (Gers). A painter, sculptor, and decorator from the Gers region, Henri Laffite showed early promise; he created his first sculptures at the age of 15 and, the following year, enrolled in the School of Fine Arts in Toulouse, later attending the school in Paris in 1904. He rented a modest room in Montparnasse, where his neighbor was the Spanish painter José Clará, a close friend of Picasso. This proximity allowed him to associate with both Picasso and Fernand Léger. He honed his sculpting skills in Rodin's studio without ever abandoning his painting. He also had the opportunity to work alongside another great artist, Maurice Denis; together, they painted the frescoes for the Sacré-Cœur de Crète church in Thonon-les-Bains. As a decorator, he left his mark on major cinemas in the capital and the Colonial Exhibition, and he decorated the Portuguese Pavilion at the 1937 World's Fair. An avid traveler, he spent time in Portugal on several occasions and lived in Brazil for a few years before returning to France toward the end of his life.
