Portrait Of A Lady Signed N. Schiavoni And Dated 1842

Artist: N. Schiavoni

An important Italian painting from the first half of the 19th century. Oil on canvas, signed and dated "N. Schiavoni f. 1842", attributed to the celebrated Venetian painter Natale Schiavoni (1777-1858), an artist particularly appreciated for his portraits and refined female figures, which earned him the reputation of "Painter of the Graces."

The painting depicts a young woman in half-length, elegantly reclining on a large red velvet cushion. Her pose, studied yet extremely natural, features her right arm bent to support her face, while her left hand, adorned with a ring, rests lightly on the cushion. The young woman gazes directly at the viewer, accompanying it with a subtle smile that lends the composition an intimate and seductive quality. Her clothing contributes significantly to the image's allure. The figure wears a light white dress with a low neckline, flowing softly over her shoulders. A sumptuous ochre shawl, embellished along the edge with an elegant embroidered band, drapes over the dress.

The rendering of the complexion is remarkable, modeled through delicate tonal transitions. The light caresses the face, décolleté, and arms, giving the skin that almost porcelain-like smoothness that is one of the most recognizable aspects of Schiavoni's painting. The face is particularly well-crafted, framed by thick hair gathered to the side in soft curls: the slight smile and the intensity of her gaze give the young woman a lively and psychologically engaging presence.

The palette is built around a few expertly balanced colors—white, deep red, golden ochre, and the black of her hair—which stand out beautifully from the dark background. Behind the figure, a gray curtain, finished with cords, suggests an elegant interior without distracting attention from the protagonist.

Dated 1842, this work belongs to Natale Schiavoni's mature period and represents one of his most distinctive and successful subjects. Indeed, the painter devoted a significant portion of his career to female images suspended between portraiture and the idealized representation of beauty, in which the elegance of the neoclassical tradition combines with a sensibility that was now fully Romantic. The painting in question fits perfectly into this vein, so much so that the young woman can be interpreted not only as a portrait, but also as a true "beautiful woman," conceived to celebrate grace, sensuality, and feminine elegance.

The work is presented in a refined, non-contemporary gilded frame in nineteenth-century style, characterized by richly decorated corners in relief. It has some small losses and signs of aging (see photo). A painting of great decorative appeal, it is particularly suitable for a collector of nineteenth-century Italian painting or for anyone seeking a figurative work by a recognized artist with a remarkable visual impact. The intimate nature of the subject and the direct connection established by the young woman's gaze make it ideal for a living room, study, or bedroom. The painting has already been restored, with small areas of color restored, but is in overall good condition.
