This late 19th-century “hardened wood” frame, in album format, comes from Sezanne, home to the only factory that produced these objects, as they say, “hardened wood.” This involved a special process in which a mixture of sawdust, shellac, and ox blood was pressed into molds under extremely high pressure. This is how this frame was made; it is in a very baroque Louis XV style and perfectly in keeping with the opulent taste of the Second Empire. A fire that ravaged the factory in the early 20th century brought all operations to a halt, thus ending the production of “hardened wood.”
