Raymond Jacques Brechenmacher (1897–1973) won the First Grand Prix de Rome for intaglio engraving in 1922. Trained in the rigor of intaglio engraving and a resident at the Villa Medici from 1923 to 1926, Raymond Jacques Brechenmacher traveled throughout France upon his return in 1927.
The Breton coastline then became a favorite subject for him. His work as an engraver directly shaped his painting. His trained eye captured the geometry of the cliffs, while his talent freed him from the constraints imposed by the engraving tool. Oil painting thus allowed the artist to break free from his former practice, enabling him to share with us the untamed beauty of Brittany.
Our painting seems to capture a small slice of this Brittany that has so inspired artists throughout the ages. The Crozon Peninsula, from which this small arch emerges, is located in the Finistère department, across from Brest.
