Joseph Popczyk (1890–1971) Cubist Art Deco Painting

Artist: Josef Popczyk (1890-1971)
Authentic Art Deco-era Cubist oil painting on canvas, circa 1925–30, signed J.POPCZYK (Joseph Popczyk, 1890–1971). Dimensions: 80 cm × 60 cm / visible area: 65 × 45 cm. Presented in an elegant antique Montparnasse-style frame made of carved wood gilded with gold leaf. Please note that the work is countersigned on the back by the artist, followed by a note indicating the title of the work (to be translated). In good overall condition; original canvas and stretcher. Based in Paris in the 1910s, the artist Popoczyk was part of the Cubist and Art Deco movements; he loved to depict the vibrancy of Parisian nightlife with verve and energy, particularly the jazz scenes in Parisian clubs. Our painting perfectly illustrates the excellence of the artist’s work—a brilliant Cubist composition that evokes the atmosphere of the emerging Parisian jazz movement during the Belle Époque. See auction records for this artist (sources: Drouot and OneBid); notably, in the fourth row, a work very similar to our painting—also featuring a jazz orchestra—sold for 5,500€. -

Quickly recognized as a talented painter, he initially created views of Paris in the style of Galien Laloue, then evolved stylistically toward Cubist compositions in the vein of the painters he knew in Paris, such as Juan Gris, Metzinger, and Herbin...
