Important 18th-Century Italian Violin-Shaped Carved and Gilded Wood Frame, 95 cm x 80 cm
A superb and significant violin-shaped frame from the 18th century, circa 1730–1760, richly carved from wood and gilded with gold leaf. Beautiful Italian craftsmanship, likely from northern Italy—Venice or Lombardy—featuring exquisite rocaille gouging.
The frame was originally designed to hold a ceremonial mercury mirror.
The pediment is crowned with the heads of seraphim and cherubs emerging from clouds, flanked by carved angel figures on the side panels.
Openwork panels decorated with latticework, rocaille cross-hatching, and dynamic acanthus scrolls.
Cartouche at the bottom of the frame carved with a pelican in an act of charity, feeding its young

Sold as-is, in its original condition, without its original glass. Beautiful original gilding displaying an antique patina with wear revealing the Armenian gold leaf. Some routine restoration work is expected: cracks at the joints that need to be reinforced and a missing section on the upper arch molding, visible in the detailed photos.
Ideal piece to once again house a period mercury mirror, a religious painting or sacred subject, or to display as is in a ceremonial frame.
