This sculpture, partially plated with 24-karat gold, rests on a lotus-shaped copper base and was created using the lost-wax casting process.
The lost-wax process, also known as “lost-wax casting,” is an ancient technique used to create metal sculptures. It involves several steps that have been practiced for thousands of years. Skilled artisans begin by carving a highly detailed wax model, reproducing every intricate detail of the desired sculpture. The wax model is then encased in a ceramic shell, formed from multiple layers of ceramic material. Once the shell has hardened, the wax is melted and removed, leaving a cavity. Molten metal is poured into this cavity, creating a precise replica of the original wax model. Once the metal has cooled and solidified, the ceramic shell is carefully removed, revealing the final metal sculpture.
Amitayus is depicted in a sumptuous and majestic style, wearing a finely crafted five-pointed crown (tiara), heavy earrings, necklaces, and a sacred thread that extends down to his torso. His face is painted with pure gold pigment, giving him an expression of profound serenity.
Mercury-based gold gilding involves applying a layer of genuine gold to the sculpture.
In Buddhism, painting the face with gold holds deep significance. It represents the intention to breathe life and expression into the statue, imbuing it with a sense of vitality and presence.
