A Pair Of Venetian Portals From The 800s

Pair of palace portals / display cases
Period: 19th century, Venice, circa mid-1800s
Dimensions: 275 cm h x 160 cm w each, with pediment
Technique: wood lacquered to imitate marble and gilded with gold leaf
Provenance: Venice, from a noble palace

Description:
A monumental, symmetrical pair featuring an architectural aedicule. Wooden structure with a broken triangular pediment, entablature with gilded corbels, side pilasters in faux red and gray Bardiglio marble, and gold capitals and rosettes. Center features an arched niche lined with yellow damask fabric and interior shelves, designed to serve as a bookcase, display case, or disguised cabinet. Base with a molded plinth; sides adorned with gilded Baroque volutes.

Style: Late Venetian Neoclassical, already reflecting the eclectic taste of grand salons. Original lacquer finish with a patina of age; very well-executed faux marble typical of 19th-century Venetian workshops.

Condition: Solid structure. One pediment is detached but complete; it needs to be reattached. The lacquer finish shows flaking, craquelure, and areas where the gilding is missing, consistent with the piece’s age and size.
