Important Italian Rococo Mirror In Gilded Wood With A Mercury-coated Mirror Surface – 18th Century

A large carved, openwork, and gilded wooden mirror, rectangular in shape, topped by a richly decorated pediment with rocaille motifs.

The frame is adorned with an abundant decoration of shells, foliage, volutes, and acanthus leaves, deeply carved and extensively openwork. The upper section, which is particularly elaborate, is centered on an ornamental crown surmounted by an openwork trellis motif, the whole reflecting a highly decorative Rocaille style.

The vigorous and dynamic carving, as well as the overall composition of the frame, suggest a work from northern Italy dating to the mid-18th century, around 1740–1760.

The original gilding has developed a beautiful patina, with signs of wear and occasional touch-ups that reveal the underlying preparation in places. The back retains its original wooden construction, featuring thick, irregular planks.

The mirror is fitted with a beautiful antique mercury-coated glass, displaying the characteristic pitting and discoloration that fully contribute to the piece’s overall charm.

There are a few older restorations and minor imperfections in the carving, visible in the photographs, which do not detract from the mirror’s aesthetic appeal or decorative presence.
