19th Century French Child’s Provincial Pine Chair With Rush Seat

A charming late 19th century French child’s chair, dating to circa 1890 and retaining a wonderful sense of rustic character and authenticity.

Made in beautifully figured pine, the chair is particularly appealing for the pronounced natural grain of the timber, which runs expressively throughout the frame and gives the surface considerable visual depth. Time and use have developed a warm, mellow patina, with the subtle variations and marks expected of a genuine antique country piece.

The tall ladder back is formed with three decoratively shaped horizontal splats, displaying elegant scalloped and arched profiles. The upright posts terminate in small turned finials, while the front legs and stretcher feature traditional turned detailing. Particularly attractive is the shaped front seat rail, ornamented with a simple repeating incised geometric pattern that adds a distinctive folk quality to the chair.

The traditional woven rush seat has a warm golden colour and complements the rich tones of the aged timber beautifully. Its unusually small proportions and low seat height indicate that the chair was specifically made for a child rather than being a full-size adult chair.

A delightful example of late 19th-century French provincial furniture, combining decorative craftsmanship, charming proportions and a beautifully aged surface.
