Bronze Hermes On A Marble Pedestal, After The Ancient "seated Hermes," 19th Century

- Bronze sculpture based on the ancient "Seated Hermes" found at the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum in 1758 and housed at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

- This bronze sculpture allows viewers to appreciate, on a smaller scale, the formal and aesthetic qualities of the famous “Seated Hermes” in Naples. Hermes, a deity of Olympus, the messenger of the gods, and the god of travel and merchants, is depicted seated on a rock. He is recognizable by his attributes: wings attached to his sandals (the talaria), and a caduceus—which is only hinted at here as the statue is fragmentary; all that remains is a staff held in his left hand. His hunched back suggests that fatigue is the reason for this rest stop. However, this moment of rest appears brief; he is seated on the edge of the rock, his body leaning forward, his feet barely touching the ground, with the palm of his right hand braced against the rock. A single push with that hand would be enough for him to stand up again and resume his duties as a messenger.
