Richly Carved Wooden Storage Bench – Renaissance Style – 19th Century
Richly Carved Wooden Storage Bench – Renaissance Style – 19th Century
A substantial and highly decorative richly carved solid wood storage bench in the Renaissance style, dating from the 19th century.
The high backrest features a remarkable architectural composition.
It is punctuated by three molded rectangular panels adorned with carved rosettes, separated by pilasters decorated with palmettes and foliage.
The upper section is particularly elaborately crafted, featuring a frieze composed of a series of carved arcades, surmounted by an elegant pediment carved with volutes and foliage, centered by a large rosette.
Two female heads carved in high relief are positioned at the upper ends of the backrest and reinforce the Renaissance character of the piece.
The substantial curved armrests rest at the front on turned baluster-shaped supports.
The wooden seat has a beautiful patina from use and is hinged, revealing a spacious storage compartment: this piece thus serves a dual purpose as a bench and a chest.
The lower section echoes the rich decorative style of the backrest with three panels adorned with rosettes, separated by posts carved with palmettes.
The piece rests on small ball-shaped feet.
It has a very beautiful, antique brown patina that reveals the wood’s natural hues and wear.
The numerous signs of use fully contribute to this piece’s authentic character.
A storage bench with a commanding presence, particularly well-suited for furnishing an entryway, a library, a foyer, or a home with character.
