The 'Spartan' technique used to create this object is noteworthy. The lily-embellished cross at the center of the central oval is expertly hand-carved, and the structure was created by hammering and carving the metal. This is another humble manifestation of the Poor Knights of Christ. The lily, an Angevin symbol at the four extremities of the cross, places the Sicilian-made object between 1262 and 1282.
