Monumental Bronze Candelabra/girandole With Figurines | Antoine-louis Barye | 1796–1875 |

The candelabra depicts the Three Graces standing, their arms intertwined, above the candle-holding arms; the shaft is adorned with three Renaissance-style monsters overlooking three seated goddesses at the base: Juno (with her scepter and peacock), Minerva, and Venus. Originally designed to replace Barye’s bronze sculpture group titled *Roger and Angelica on the Hippogriff* (Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.)—a work inspired by an episode from Ludovico Ariosto’s *Orlando Furioso* (1532)—this candelabra was commissioned for the Duke of Orléans, the youngest son of King Louis-Philippe. Created in 1840, this model, titled “Nine-light candelabra, decorated with six figures, mascarons, and chimeras,” bears the signature “BARYE” twice.
