Painting: Landscape With Shepherds And Herds
Oil on canvas. Flemish school, late 17th–early 18th century. On the reverse, in pencil, there is an old attribution to Nicolaes Berchem (1620–11683), a painter of landscapes with pastoral figures whose style is similar to that of this work. The landscape features a stream running through the center of a plain flanked by rocky outcrops, within which natural tunnels are formed by the path. Various figures of travelers pass along the path: in the foreground, a man wades across the stream with his pack donkey; behind him, a herdsman on horseback approaches with his cows; minor figures are crossing the rock tunnel on the right. The painting has been restored and re-painted in the past. It is presented in a period-style frame.
