Richly Carved Wooden Tobacco Box Or Jar
A very beautiful, richly carved wooden box; it may be a tobacco jar. The lid features a relief carving depicting a battle between a reptile (crocodile, gavial...?) and a snake; the eyes are made of glass. There is a decorative frieze around the edge. The body of the box is also carved with a village scene featuring bulbous roofs, a boat, and a tree that appears to be a palm tree. It stands on a circular base also carved with a frieze and a row of beads.
In good condition with a beautiful warm patina; note that the reptile’s head is glued to the body (I believe this is part of the original construction)
