Pierre Laprade : "at The Print Dealer's"

PierreLaprade (1875–1931): “At the Print Dealer’s,” oil on thick cardboard, 55× 39 cm, mounted in a modern black-and-gold frame with a reverse bevel, 60 × 44 cm (pine hole at the top).
Though somewhat forgotten today, Laprade nevertheless had a uniqueand distinctive career marked by an immediately recognizable style: fluid Impressionism withgenerous impasto and often intimate subjects, much like his friends Bonnard and Lebasque.Although he exhibited at the famous Galerie Eugène Druet, it was above all hiscollaboration with Ambroise Vollard that launched his career: the renowned dealer withunfailing instincts purchased his entire studio collection around 1903…
From then on, collectors flocked to him, and it is possible that our paintingwas produced at his home, as the gallery owner was also a print publisher.
Probably dating from the very early 1920s, it depicts, in a monochrome paletteof pink, blue, and gray, a young woman in a Paul Poiret-style kimono dress admiring a print amidst sketchboards.
