Anthropomorphic Statuette From Mutila–lega, Drc
A monoxyl anthropomorphic statuette carved from deer antler, featuring an oily patina of a reddish-ochre hue. Typical of Lega statuary, it depicts a simplified figure with a cylindrical torso, standing on short, bent legs and flanked by stylized arms detached from the body. The ovoid head features a face with simplified features, characterized by two large, circular eyes deeply carved into the wood and a gaping oval mouth.
These wooden sculptures serve as rank emblems within the Bwami Lega initiatory society and function as educational aids during rites of passage.
