Anthropomorphic Iginga Initiation Statuette (profile) – Lega, D.r.c., Africa
Anthropomorphic statuette carved from bone. Viewed in profile, it reveals a curved and dynamic silhouette that highlights the pronounced concavity of the face, which then resembles a heart.
The body is adorned with circular motifs called “partridge’s eye,” which are characteristic of the Lega decorative tradition.
This sculpture, associated with the rituals of the Bwami society, served as a didactic and mnemonic aid, manipulated in time with songs and proverbs during initiation rites.
