This genre portrait, rich in color and typical of Italian Romanticism, was painted around 1840 by Vincenzo Catalano (1814, Rome – after 1860, Naples), a renowned artist. His works are extremely rare on the international art market.
Vincenzo Catalano (Catalani), an Italian painter born in Rome in 1814, worked in Naples between 1830 and 1860. He exhibited his works at various exhibitions held by the Royal Institute of Fine Arts and the Royal Museum of Naples. His paintings can be found at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and at the Royal Museum of Capodimonte (“Episode of the Flood”). Filangieri also mentions two other paintings: “La Sonnambula” and a portrait of the artist Van Maldichen (in the studio of the painter Palizzi).
The model for this painting is Lucia Mondella, the heroine of Alessandro Manzoni’s historical novel, *The Betrothed*.
As Renzo Tramaglino’s fiancée, she is the heroine of the story. A silk spinner, she lives with her mother, Agnese, in a village on the shores of Lake Como in Lombardy.
Young, modest, and deeply devout, she is distinguished by her great moral strength. Her marriage to Renzo is thwarted by the cruel feudal lord Don Rodrigo, who covets her. Courage: Despite her abduction and the terrible ordeals she endures, she maintains an unshakable resolve and forgives her tormentors, particularly the Stranger.
