This marine is still contained in its original 17th-century frame with ripple mouldings, which is highly unusual, as Dutch paintings from this period very rarely survive in their original frames. However, paintings on oval supports have higher rates of survival for original frames, as they are considerably more complicated to replace.

When this painting appeared at auction at Sotheby’s Amsterdam in 1985, it was catalogued as coming from the circle of Gerrit Pompe. On the basis of the photograph that was taken then, Dr Christina Wansink of the RKD in The Hague attributed it to Cornelis Bol.

Cornelis Bol was born in Antwerp and married there in 1616 to Susanna de Momper, a member of that celebrate family of artists. By 1624 they had moved to Paris, where they joined the Calvinist community, and in 1635-36 they lived in Londen. By 1637 they were living in Haarlem, here they remained for the rest of his life.

Good condition for the age, a few scratches to the frame, as is usual.
