Adolphe Appian (1818–1898) was a French painter, draftsman, and engraver, known for his poetic landscapes and his role in the revival of etching in the 19th century.
Born on August 28, 1818, in Lyon, he initially intended to pursue a career in business before devoting himself fully to art. He studied drawing and music, then turned to landscape painting. Very early on, he developed a particular interest in the effects of light, reflections on water, and natural atmospheres.
Beginning in the 1850s, Appian exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon. He was close to several artists from Lyon, notably Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, whose influence is evident in his landscapes with their soft, atmospheric tones. He also associated with artists from the Lyon School, while developing his own personal style.
Appian is particularly famous for his etchings, which have earned him an international reputation. His prints are distinguished by their delicacy, subtle contrasts, and remarkable mastery of light and shadow. He primarily depicts landscapes of the Rhône Valley, the area around Lyon, the Forest of Fontainebleau, and the south of France.
Over the years, his painting style evolved toward a brighter palette, at times resembling the work of the Impressionists, though he never fully belonged to that movement. His work is appreciated for its balance between realism and poetic sensibility.
In 1868, he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in recognition of his contribution to the arts.
Adolphe Appian died on April 29, 1898, in Lyon, leaving behind a significant body of work consisting of paintings, watercolors, drawings, and several hundred engravings.
Today, his works are housed in numerous museums, notably the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and the Musée d’Orsay, as well as in several collections in Europe and the United States. His work is particularly sought after by collectors of 19th-century landscapes and antique prints.
