Navy – French-flagged Three-masted Steamship, Late 19th Century, Napoleon III, Cape Horn

An old oil-on-canvas painting depicting a three-masted steamship flying the French flag, sailing full sail in rough seas. The ship, seen in profile, is passing through a strait flanked by rocky shores beneath a sky filled with clouds.

The rigging, sails, hull, and funnel are depicted with precision, while the foaming waves lend a great deal of movement to the composition.

This painting also holds significant family and commemorative value.
According to family tradition, the ship depicted is said to be the one aboard which a family member rounded Cape Horn.

An old inscription on the reverse appears to read “Monsçavoir” / “Monscavoir.”

The work was created in the mid-19th century and is presented in its wooden frame with gilded stucco, decorated with fluting and a row of pearls.

Dimensions with frame: 49.5 × 37 cm.
