History of the Cris de Paris
The practice of street hawking is described there as a public service under the authority of the crown. Men, women, and children would wander the streets, calling out their wares or services to attract customers. Each trade had its own distinctive call. Meissen drew inspiration from these trades and created a series of 34 figurines featuring these characters.
