Painted in 1876 and signed “Galiani,” this landscape dates from the early years of Eugène Galien-Laloue’s (1854–1941) career. Born in Paris, the painter developed an interest in landscapes and scenes of everyday life at a very early age, before becoming famous for his views of Paris during the Belle Époque. Throughout his career, he used several pseudonyms, including Galiani, an Italianized form of his name.

This early work reflects his early interest in nature and rural landscapes. A church with a slender bell tower stands out in the center of the composition, surrounded by lush vegetation and bordered by a stream. The artist constructs the scene around a powerful contrast between the dark masses in the foreground and the diffused light that envelops the sky and the distant landscape.

The painting reveals a sensibility still closely aligned with the 19th-century French landscape tradition, with particular attention paid to the effects of light and atmosphere. Galien-Laloue would, in fact, devote a significant portion of his body of work to rural landscapes—particularly in Normandy and Seine-et-Marne—alongside his famous Parisian scenes.

The year 1876 marked an important moment in the young painter’s career: he presented his first work that year, before making his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1877. This painting, created under the pseudonym “Galiani,” thus offers a particularly interesting glimpse into his early artistic career, long before the elegant Parisian street scenes that would make him famous.
