Simon BUSSY (1870–1954), French painter and pastel artist, co-founder of the Nabi group. Born into a family of master shoemakers, he began his artistic training at the Dole School of Drawing, then joined Gustave Moreau’s Parisian studio at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he rubbed shoulders with Henri Matisse and Eugène Martel, with whom he became close friends.
Operating on the fringes of the major artistic movements, he developed a highly personal style in his landscape paintings and expressive portraits, notably of great writers such as André Gide, Roger Martin du Gard, and Paul Valéry, whom he regularly hosted at his villa, La Souco, in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. But it was above all his animal pastels—executed with great attention to detail and a simplification of forms—that made him famous.
Exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français, he received an honorable mention in 1894, where he exhibited *The Clarinet Player* as well as *Saint George Slaying the Dragon*. The portrait of Albert Maignan was exhibited in 1896.
In 1903, he married the British novelist Dorothy Strachey, who was associated with the Bloomsbury Group. Their daughter, Jane Simone Bussy (1906–1960), was a painter.
*Bestiaire* is one of the few works he illustrated, and the only one of a bibliophilic nature.
