This exquisite sewing set reflects the exceptional fascination of high society during the Second Empire with exoticism and “chinoiserie.”
Although often referred to generically as Indochinese or Cantonese décor, this type of art object is not the work of a single designer in the modern sense.
It is the result of the work of highly skilled lacquer masters, who drew inspiration from models imported by the East India Company to satisfy the tastes of a refined European clientele.
The piece opens with an upper flap, the reverse side of which reveals a composition of great iconographic richness.
Two figures of dignitaries—painted elements—stand out elegantly against a dark lacquer background.
These figures are framed by a peripheral frieze of scrollwork and foliage accented with gold.
The interior reveals an ingenious and complex set of sewing or writing accessories.
The tray is divided into numerous compartments and removable bins, adorned with miniature scenes of palaces, pagodas, and lakeside landscapes.
The lid is topped with a small, meticulously carved bone pull tab.
The outer band of the chest features a continuous gold decoration centered around lively scenes of daily life and traditional Asian architecture.
The entire structure rests on four curved legs carved in the shape of a bird of prey’s talons clutching a ball, a Chippendale-inspired motif that was highly prized at the time.

Condition:
In fair condition, typical for a piece of furniture from this period.
Note that there is normal wear on the upper part of the tabletop, as well as a few small, localized chips in the lacquer and gilding, which in no way detract from the piece’s visual appeal or authenticity.
