Wahliss Wien Porcelain Dinner Service, Late 19th Century, Neoclassical-inspired
A fine Bohemian porcelain dinner set featuring a neoclassical and Louis XVI-inspired design, gilded and painted in Vienna by the renowned Ernst Wahliss company. Set contents (17 pieces)
- 8 large dinner plates — Diameter: 25.5 cm
- 8 small plates (for dessert or appetizers) — Diameter: 20.5 cm
- 1 small covered soup tureen (table soup tureen) with a lid featuring a notch for the ladle, resting on its stand.
- Le Marly (the border): It is adorned with a very elegant neoclassical-inspired frieze. Stylized garlands and foliage, reminiscent of spearhead and plant motifs, are intricately intertwined.
- Technique and Color Relief: The refinement of this frieze lies in the meticulous application of touches of color (cobalt blue, brick red, and green) worked in a slight raised layer. Far from being simply painted flat, these shades are applied in the form of fine droplets of vitrified enamel. This relief creates true “enamel pearls” that catch the light and provide a three-dimensional textural interplay when touched, reminiscent of the goldsmithing work found in cloisonné enamel or set semi-precious stones.
- Gilding: Generous gilding with fine gold highlights the contours of each piece. A double band of burnished gold frames the marly, along with superb gilded highlights on the button-like handle of the soup tureen’s lid and on its geometric, coiled handles.
The reverse side of the pieces bears a double mark of great interest to collectors, revealing a high-end collaboration common in the late 19th century - The green mark with two crossed hammers: Signature of the Fischer & Mieg (Pirkenhammer) factory, located in Bohemia.
- Internationally renowned for the exceptional whiteness and translucency of its hard-paste porcelain, this factory produced “blanks” of the highest quality.
- The red handwritten signature “Wahliss, Wien”: Mark of the workshop of the famous Austrian ceramist and merchant Ernst Wahliss (1837–1900), based in Vienna. The prestigious Porzellanhaus Ernst Wahliss purchased these unglazed pieces from Pirkenhammer to apply its own exclusive, handcrafted decorations.
