These semi-precious stones, meticulously carved in the flat (intaglios) or in relief (cameos), were admired and coveted since Antiquity. This craze reached its peak during the Neoclassical period in Rome. At the end of the 18th century, workshops such as the Paoletti workshop, located at 49 Piazza di Spagna, produced molds made of glass paste based on originals preserved in the most famous collections. These molds allowed them tomass-produce impressions in scagliola (a type of plaster or stucco) intended for travelers, collectors, artists, and other enthusiasts passing through Rome.
