Sofa/bench With Double Caning And Gilded Wood, Louis XVI Style, From The 1900s
A very elegant Louis XVI-style carved and gilded wooden sofa, dating from around 1900, featuring fine cabinetmaking and carving.
This piece is particularly distinguished by its double caning across the entire backrest and sides, a meticulously crafted detail that lends it strength, refinement, and elegance. Only the seat is made of single caning, and this is entirely new.
The dynamic, enveloping backrest features rich carved decoration. It is centered by an oval caned medallion, framed by panels adorned with束状 motifs. The various sections are accentuated by friezes, foliage, rosettes, and floral motifs in the Louis XVI neoclassical style.
The rounded armrests harmoniously extend the backrest and are, like it, upholstered with double cane work.
The chair rests on four tapered legs with twisted decoration, carved and gilded.
Thegilding has a lovely antique patina with some wear and signs of age, which add to the charm and authenticity of this period chair dating from around 1900.
