The artist, André Poujet (1919–1996), was associated with the Surrealists. He began his career at the Galerie Esquisse, which also exhibited works by Kandinsky, de Staël, and Poliakoff, and later exhibited at the Galerie Denise René. In 1942, he married Aline Gagnaire, with whom he opened a bookstore-gallery at 52 Quai des Orfèvres. This was the painter’s most accomplished and highly sought-after creative period.
