An unusually fresh and spontaneous oil sketch of a child in three different positions by the Dutch painter Albert Neuhuys, presumably made in preparation for a larger finished oil painting. Although such sketches were not made for sale but rather remained as part of the studio holdings, nowadays they are more highly regarded than the artist’s finished works.

Neuhuys was originally part of the Larense School, and later became associated with members of the Hague School, including Jozef Israëls, Anton Mauve and the Maris brothers. He specialised in interior genre scenes, which were hugely popular during his lifetime but have slightly fallen out of favour since.

Good condition for the age. A very minor damage to the right of the child and thin associated spot in the canvas.
