Libertine Painting: Nude Woman, Erotic Boudoir, Alcove, Eroticism, 19th Century, Oval

Artist: école Française

A lovely, intimate portrait of a young woman: her head tilted and her gaze direct, her shoulders and chest bare, wrapped in a sea-green shawl with a satiny sheen. The deliberately compact composition contrasts a sober bluish-gray background with the model’s very fair complexion, and concludes with a floral touch (a bouquet of red and pink flowers) symbolizing the attribute of seduction.

In the 19th century, these “boudoir nudes” or “fantasy nudes” existed alongside the mythological academic nude. They were generally intended for private use (private collections, studies, smoking rooms, reception rooms), with a tone that was more sentimental and suggestive than allegorical. The imagery is coded: the feigned modesty of the drapery and the offered flower create a sensual scene without veering into the explicit. This type of image also found a place, for decorative purposes, in houses of pleasure (brothels) in the late 19th century, where people particularly appreciated this genre of “charming” paintings in a decorative format.

French School, late 19th century, circa 1885–1890. Confident line work, blended skin tones, glazes, and soft modeling: an aesthetic reminiscent of Parisian studios and the elegant fin-de-siècle nude.

Oil on oval canvas.

Antique canvas mounted on an oval wooden stretcher.

Original canvas with numerous restorations and old retouches. There is surface wear, marks, and touch-ups, particularly around the edges. Despite these interventions, the work as a whole retains strong decorative appeal and a decidedly captivating presence.
