Bronze Modest Nude Venus, 17th Century, After Antoine Coysevox, Ref. 1221
Based on a work by Antoine Coysevox (1640–1720).
Bronze medal with patina depicting the Crouching Venus.
Period: early 17th century.
This piece draws on the ancient model while reinterpreting certain details: the hair slipping through the fingers of the right hand and the modesty veil passing between Venus’s legs. It is also worth noting the exquisite details of the chiseling on the hair, hands, and drapery. Traces of ancient tools (a rasp) can be seen beneath her feet.
The marble sculpture, created in 1684, is on display in Room 105 as part of the Louvre Museum’s collections. The original model, carved in Greece in the 3rd century BCE from marble, is also housed at the Louvre. It is also known as the Modest Venus. The subject enjoyed great popularity from the moment of its creation: marbles, bronzes, terracottas...
Condition: As found; the patina is rubbed and worn in places; the modesty veil is broken and a portion is missing. The pedestal on which the Venus was to be mounted is also missing.
