Raphael Arnal (1906–1963), Landscape With An Oratory, Oil On Canvas, Signed, Framed, 1948
Artist: Raphael Arnal (1906-1963)
The Oratory, or “Composed Landscape,” oil on canvas by Raphael Arnal (1906–19663), a Provençal Expressionist artist born in Languedoc who studied at the Beaux-Arts in Montpellier. He exhibited in Montpellier, Avignon, Salon-de-Provence, and Paris, then for 14 years in Marseille, in the La Pintade neighborhood—which he often depicted in his work—and finally in Vence and Antibes during the last years of his life.He was a close friend of Max Jacob, with whom he exchanged a substantial body of correspondence that was later published by the journal *Massilia*. A complex figure in modern art, his painting is characterized by powerful expression and intense colors, as seen here in this landscape scene.
