A Finely Crafted Tobacco Grater From Nîmes With A Carved Center, Plain Rosewood, 18th Century
Fine solid rosewood tobacco grater carved from a single piece of wood, found in French Gard region.
The back is slightly convex and tapered, featuring a three-sided raised crest. Edges are simply defined by two engraved lines. Front is hollowed out to accommodate an inlaid sheet-iron grating plate with an asymmetrical punched pattern.
Discharge opening is carved in shape of a heart. There is no other ornamentation.
This near-total lack of decoration is striking for an object crafted with such care. It is reminiscent of items attributed to Protestant communities in the South of France—such as small chests, Bible holders, and mirrors—where the quality of materials and craftsmanship takes precedence over decoration.
This grater appears to belong to that same tradition of understated elegance.
The carefully selected rosewood displays a uniform grain and a beautiful patina from use.
The object feels pleasant in hand and reflects meticulous craftsmanship.
Dimensions: 22.5 × 6 × 1.5 cm.
Condition: Good overall condition. No wormholes. The object remains in its original, unrestored condition.
Note only an old split on the raised crest, visible in the photographs and marked by red arrows
