Beautiful silver sculpture of a ‘knight in armour’, Hanau, 19th century.
A very finely detailed silver sculpture depicting a knight with his shield, armour and sword, set on a beautiful plinth.
The knight’s face is made of ivory and the helmet opens and closes.
The sculpture is made of silver, partially gold-plated; it bears the 800 hallmark on its base, as well as another hallmark. Hallmark: the woman accompanied by two children is an allegorical representation of Charitas (charity).
This is a very well-known and significant pseudo-hallmark from Hanau, which directly identifies the silversmith in question. Creator of the sculpture: Ludwig Neresheimer & Co., founded in 1890 in Hanau.
This firm was world-renowned for its high-quality silverware in the ‘historicist’ style and its figures of knights.
