Dan Mask, Ivory Coast

Face carved fromwood in a naturalistic style, with slit eyes that allow it to beused; prominent lips and nose; red clay dusted around the eyes; overallshiny black patina. On the sides of the head, fabric rolls aredecorated with cowrie shells. These small shells are considered apowerful good-luck charm, a protective talisman, and a symbol ofwealth in many cultures around the world, particularly in Africa,Asia, and the Indian Ocean. Once used as currency, its shape evokes bothabundance and femininity. The top of the mask is topped with a plume made of animal hair (goat?).
