Legras – Large Vase From The “rubis” Series With Virginia Creeper Design – Art Nouveau, Circa 1900

A beautiful Legras vase made of multilayered glass, part of the famous “Rubis” series, a hallmark of early 20th-century French art glass.

With a slender ovoid shape, the vase features a generously rounded body that tapers gradually toward a short neck, ending in a slightly flared rim. Its particularly well-balanced proportions perfectly highlight the continuous decorative pattern.

The glass features a beautiful frosted and marbled background in shades of pale pink, salmon, and opalescent white, with deeper tones toward the base and neck.

Against this delicately nuanced background unfolds a prominent botanical design of stylized Virginia creeper leaves in a striking ruby-violet hue. The motif is created using acid etching, causing the leaves to appear in slight relief against the satin-finished background. The veins are finely rendered, lending the foliage a sense of movement.

A frieze of small, stylized leaves and berries runs across the upper part of the vase’s body, while large, palmate leaves cascade freely down the vase’s sides. This asymmetrical, naturalistic composition is perfectly representative of Art Nouveau taste.

The contrast between the marbled pink background and the purple decoration is particularly striking and varies noticeably depending on the lighting.

Signed “Legras” within the decoration, in the lower part of the body.

Produced by the Legras factory in Saint-Denis, circa 1900–1910, during the Art Nouveau period.

In very good overall condition. A few very slight marks and surface irregularities inherent to the technique and the age of the glass. No visible major damage.
