The binding, made of leather that was originally burgundy with a gilt title and edges and abrass clasp, is heavily damaged but complete.
A truly beautiful gift!
It was given to the American billionaire Franck Jay Gould (1877–1956) for Christmas 1896 by his first wife, Helen Margaret Kelly.
The sixth child of Jay Gould, who amassed a colossal fortune in the American railroad industry, he successfully ventured into building hotels and casinos in fashionable resort destinations, as well as into improving the equine breed.
As this album shows (volume two of a series of unknown size), hecollected at that time, in particular, what is commonly referred to as “Salon painting”: Henner, Meissonier, Roybet, but also Milletand Zamacoïs…
Later, with his third wife, Florence La Caze, of French origin,he began collecting primarily Impressionists and modern painters instead…
