Alfred Lesbros (1873–1940), *the Old Mill*, Oil On Canvas, Signed, Framed
Artist: Alfred Lesbros (1873-1940)
Alfred Lesbros attended several art schools and studied under Provençal masters such as Jules Flour and Pierre Grivolas; he was also the driving force behind the exhibitions of the Groupe des Treize. The group held its first exhibition on December 21, 1912, which was a resounding success, followed by a second exhibition on December 18, 1913, which was also its last.
He participated in the Salon de Lyon, the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, and the Salon d’Automne.
He painted more than a hundred works now on display in museums or public collections in Aix-en-Provence, Arles, Avignon, Marseille, Montpellier, and Tournon.
The Calvet Museum in Avignon holds: Thury’s Cour de la Livrée, The Garden, and Promenade. He was influenced by the artistic movements of the early 20thcentury, from Impressionism to Cubism, which he conveyed in his paintings through his Provençal sensibility.
His works are oil paintings primarily featuring landscapes. His techniques vary; thus, the same view is rendered using different painting styles: Pointillism, Realism, Synthetism, or even Abstraction.
Starting in the 1920s, his subjects were drawn from the areas around Graveson, Boulbon, Barbentane, Villeneuve-les-Avignon, and Avignon.
