Pair Of French Armchairs From The 1940s–1950s, In The Style Of André Arbus

A pair of French armchairs from the 1940s–1950s, in the style of André Arbus, featuring an elegant light-wood frame—likely oak—paired with antique dark green leather upholstery.

The design is based on a highly structured framework: a slightly sloped rectangular backrest, straight and horizontal armrests, front posts defined by geometric recesses, and tapered legs. The piece as a whole offers a sober, balanced silhouette that is highly characteristic of French furniture from the 1940s.

This geometric construction, combined with the use of light wood and dark leather, is part of the French neoclassical revival of that period. The design evokes the creations of André Arbus and, more broadly, the furniture of the great French interior designers of the time, who sought a synthesis between classical tradition, architectural lines, and modernity.

The backrests feature a rectangular leather-upholstered cushion set within an exposed wooden frame. The seats are also upholstered in antique green leather. The design is deliberately minimalist and relies primarily on the quality of the proportions, the contrast of materials, and the rows of patinated metal upholstery tacks edging the upholstery.

The front legs feature a design punctuated by changes in cross-section at the armrests and waistline. The slightly tapered legs visually lighten the structure. The slanted backrest and the space left beneath the cushion further accentuate the chairs’ graphic appeal.

Their design is reminiscent of the furniture by André Arbus, as well as certain works by Jacques Adnet, André Domin, and Marcel Genevrière for Dominique, Jean-Charles Moreux, and other French interior designers active around the 1940s and 1950s.

The pair retains its original dark green leather upholstery, with a beautiful patina from use. The leather shows visible scuffs, cracks, marks, and variations in color, particularly on the seats and edges. The wood also retains some traces and signs of wear consistent with the chairs’ age. These elements give the set an authentic and decorative appearance.
