Edmond Sigrist, Painting, View Of The Seine In Paris, Javel, Meudon, Auteuil Bridge, Fauvist, 1900, Luce
Artist: Edmond Sigrist
Edmond Sigrist – Paris, the Seine towards Javel seen from the Auteuil Bridge, circa 1900. The composition captures the Seine from the balustrade of the Auteuil Bridge, with the Javel industrial sites in the distance; the blue and mauve reflections, the vibrant brushstrokes, and the light glazes place the painting firmly in the Post-Impressionist vein. The slightly rising balustrade reflects the bridge's actual ramp at that time and reinforces the effect of painting "from life." The historical significance is considerable: the bridge and its surroundings were extensively redesigned in the 20th century, and this perspective no longer exists in its original form today. The painting thus becomes a rare Parisian document, a testament to the banks of the Seine during the Belle Époque, between the topography of Auteuil and the industrial landscape of Javel. Edmond Sigrist (1882–1947) was born in Paris, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Luc-Olivier Merson, exhibited at the Salons (Indépendants, Automne), and worked with the Galerie Druet between the two World Wars. A painter, engraver, lithographer, and illustrator, he favored urban scenes, the banks of the Seine, the suburbs, and some floral subjects; his style blends Impressionist heritage with decorative modernity. It belongs to the Parisian landscape painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and naturally engages in a dialogue with Albert Lebourg, Stanislas Lépine, Albert Marquet, Gustave Caillebotte, and Maximilien Luce through its attention to light, the reflections of the Seine, and industrial silhouettes. Oil on canvas, Figure format, 46 × 38 cm, signed lower right "Sigrist," re-signed on the reverse with the artist's address and the handwritten inscription on the stretcher "The Seine at Meudon: view from the Auteuil bridge," as well as the exhibition number "XI." The work is presented in a later giltwood frame, 60 × 51 cm, in good overall condition with a uniform patina; the canvas is sound, well-stretched, and the surface is clean. EU/UK delivery 19 euros.
