The work bears a signature “E. …” (to be deciphered) in the lower left corner, followed by the notation “after Roybet”.

It thus follows in the tradition of the compositions by Ferdinand Roybet (1840–1920), a French painter particularly renowned for his genre scenes depicting musketeers and gentlemen of the 17th and 18th centuries.
