Portfolio Of 16 Hand-colored Lithographs By Langlumé - ~1825 - Album Of Young Artists By Various Artists
Artist: Langlumé
A rare lithographic album from the early 19th century, featuring lithographs with gilt edges, presented in its original portfolio made of embossed percaline and decorated with gold foil, bearing the gilt title:
“Album of Young Artists”
A title page also states:
“Album of Young Artists by Various Masters.” This title page appears in two copies.
The set, which is preserved but clearly incomplete, comprises 16 original lithographs on paper, all of a uniform small format (approximately 11.9 × 18.7 cm), signed and printed:
“Lith. de Langlumé.”
Each sheet also bears the printed signature of the artist who provided the drawing.
The compositions are divided as follows:
9 genre scenes signed “Aubry del. ,” depicting scenes of everyday and picturesque life: drawing studio scenes, begging, rural scenes, dancing, carriage rides, hunts on horseback, military scenes, romantic encounters in the countryside, etc.
3 plates of landscapes and architecture signed “Atoch 1822,” including, in particular, views of waterwheels, villages, seaside cliffs, and ruins in romantic landscapes.
4 mythological compositions signed “Achille Dh inv.”, including subjects inspired by ancient mythology. This likely refers to Achille Deveria (1800–1857), a painter, engraver, and illustrator of the Romantic era.
The lithographs are hand-colored with period watercolors, as evidenced by the variations in tone, the transparency, and the nuances visible in the solid areas of color. The colors have remained particularly fresh, vivid, and harmonious, with no noticeable fading.
Condition:
Preserved antique portfolio, with gilded decoration still intact. Note, however, minor wear at the folds along the edge and two severed cords.
Lithographs are free of tears.
Clean margins.
No foxing.
Three plates show slight old traces of moisture.
Colors are well-preserved, not faded, and not smudged.
A fine copy of a rare lithographic album (none are currently for sale) intended for art enthusiasts and young artists of the early 19th century, bringing together compositions by several masters in the Romantic spirit of the era.
Plate dimensions: approximately 11.9 × 18.7 cm.
Date: circa 1825.
