Antique Bedspread Hand-embroidered In The Sicilian "sfilato" Style, Mid-20th Century

A light ecru linen bedspread, entirely hand-embroidered in Italy using the Sicilian “sfilato” technique. The design centers around a rich central medallion, surrounded by pairs of little angels—eight in total—arranged at the corners, as if to support the fabric.

The bedspread is not made from a single piece of fabric, but from five separate pieces: the central panel and four side panels. These five pieces were assembled—after being embroidered separately—using an extremely dense stitch, perfectly visible on the reverse side and when held up to the light. This process stems either from a practical necessity or the unavailability of a single piece of fabric large enough.

The condition is excellent: the bedspread appears to have never been used, retaining the freshness of the fabric and the sharpness of the embroidery. There are no alterations and no weakness in the openwork areas.
