Collection: A Flint Nucleus Known As The “neolithic Butter Book”
Archaeological andPrehistoric Artifacts
Levallois-flaked core, known as the “butterbook,” from Grand-Pressigny (Indre-et-Loire)
3rd–4th millennium B.C.
Dimensions: 14 x 12 x 6.5 cm;weight: 1.5 kg
The “pound ofbutter” cores have made the Grand-Pressigny site famous. Their shape, resembling one-pound blocks of butter that farmers of the time would mold before selling, gave them this nickname. The flint blades were extracted from the core using the so-called “Levallois” method, which involves striking one of the faces of a flint block with precision to dislodge a flake from the opposite face, which had previously been given a convex curvature
