Colonial Africa (1932): Thanks to a travel grant, he spent several months exploring French Sudan (present-day Mali), Upper Volta (Burkina Faso), Guinea, and Senegal. It was during this African journey that he passed through Cameroon and painted this portrait in Garoua in March 1932, fascinated by the local faces and traditional adornments.
