Oil on canvas by the Italian painter Eugenio Amus (Brescia 1834–Bordeaux 1899), depicting a market scene in northern France (Normandy or Brittany).
This work departs from his usual seascapes or mountain landscapes to portray everyday life with various characters during a market scene in a small town in northern France.
Note the red cap worn by the central figure; Amus almost always added a touch of red to his paintings (as a true Garibaldian).
Signed lower right “Godchaux” (pseudonym).
The painting is on its original canvas and has not undergone any restoration. There are some slight areas of missing paint.

EUGENIO AMUS (Brescia, 1834 – Bordeaux, 1899). During his youth, he trained under the masters Rottini and Joli; later, he attended the Brera Academy in Milan and won a competition, after which he devoted himself to landscape painting, particularly seascapes. From 1866 to 1869 he exhibited in Paris, and in 1870 he fought in the Franco-Prussian War. He traveled throughout Europe and America, painting scenes of daily life.

In 1878, he moved permanently to Bordeaux, where he was hired by the painter and art dealer Alfred Godchaux. Following this encounter, he began producing works under the name Godchaux—likely to satisfy his patron’s artistic aspirations. In this regard, works signed “Godchaux” comprise a diverse body of work in which, in some cases, Amus’s hand is easily recognizable, while in others—under the same signature—the work is actually by the patron himself, who possessed more modest talent as a painter.
